Welcome everyone to another edition of Riiip with Brody the Kid! Let’s get right to it!
The NBA Draft Lottery took place and the Timberwolves hit the #1 pick, followed by the Warriors, Hornets and Bulls. Here is my prediction for the first 4 picks:
Timberwolves – Anthony Edwards
Warriors – James Wiseman
Hornets – LaMelo Ball
Bulls – Obi Toppin
What do you guys think? I could also see the Warriors trade their pick for a veteran stud.
Will the Lakers make it to the NBA Finals and win the championship? The Rockets are playing well. It will be exciting to see what happens. Let me know who you guys think will win!!
Baseball is halfway through their season and here are some of my takeaways. My Chicago White Sox have the strongest offense in MLB. The Red Sox REALLY miss Mookie Betts (and Chris Sale). Fernando Tatis Jr. looks like the front runner for NL MVP. Bo Bichette was hitting like Tony Gwynn before he got hurt, and now Vladdy Jr. is heating up as the Blue Jays are making a run to the playoffs. Finally, the AL Rookie of the Year race looks like it will be a fun one between Kyle Lewis and Luis Robert.
2020 Topps Archives recently came out! Phil’s Pulls (aka Phil Hughes) is in the product with autographed cards and he said whoever pulls one of his 4 1/1’s with the Phil’s Pulls inscriptions will be sent a ton of prizes! So, keep an eye out for those and Good Luck on the Hunt!
BIG NEWS! I am really excited to announce that I am going to be one of the new hosts on the web show/podcast, Hobby Hotline! I cannot wait to do this with John Newman and many more awesome hobbyists! My first show will be this Saturday 9/5 at 10 AM Central. Make sure to check it out @hobbyhotline for all the details.
Speaking of John Newman, this month’s interview is with the man himself! John is the creator and host of Sports Card Nation Podcast, one of the hobby’s biggest podcasts and one of the hosts of Hobby Hotline as well! I have been on Sports Card Nation Podcast a couple times in the past and am stoked that John asked me to be on his 100th Episode, which will be live on Halloween! I threw some questions at John and he had some very interesting answers, so let’s do it!
- How did you start collecting as a kid?
My grandpa bought me a 1979 Topps BB pack & I pulled a Reggie Jackson card.
- How did you decide to start doing a podcast?
I was guest starring on a sports radio show where I talked about cards on Fridays, I had thought about doing it for a couple years on my own & did it.
- You are into the 90’s on total episodes, besides me (LOL) who has been your favorite guest to talk to, or someone you never thought you would ever interview?
Dr. Beckett being an icon of the hobby & yes you, hence you are both on episode #100.
- How fun has it been to interview all the Topps Project 2020 artists? Has one of them been your favorite or most unique?
It’s been an absolute blast, I interviewed almost half of them & have formed friendships with a few where we text & talk, Gregory Siff even did a caricature of me, they are all talented but love the details in JK5’s. I can’t confirm or deny seeing some of the cards before their public release. Lol.
- What has been your favorite thing about doing the podcast?
Getting to know talented people better…& you know…”The Hobby is the people”
- What is your favorite card you have in your collection?
My 1/1 Flawless Jackie Robinson Game Used Patch card (pic of John’s card shown here)
- Who are your picks at the midway point of the season to make the World Series and who wins?
I’m going Rays & Dodgers & I think the Dodgers finally get over the bump.
Brody the Kid: Rays vs. Dodgers I think is a very good prediction as they both lead their division with great records. My guess is the Chicago White Sox are going to beat the Rays in the American League Championship Series and then face the Dodgers in the World Series. I’ve got Sox in 7! Go White Sox!
Thank you for doing the interview, John! Also thank you again for inviting me to be on Episode 100 on Sports Card Nation Podcast. It is going to be a lot of fun! Don’t forget everyone to check out Hobby Hotline every Saturday and catch me on there this Saturday! Join the live chat and say hi and let me know what you are having for breakfast! Stay safe everyone and have a great month!
